About Tommy

The McCarthy family has a rich history in the motor sports industry. The family name carries on at Thunderhill Raceway in WIllows, California, where Tom McCarthy Lane sits in memory of Tommy's grandfather who went through great strides to create a new racetrack back in the late 1980s.

As a third generation race car driver, Tommy began his racing career at age of 5. He holds championships in major racing disciplines including karting, pavement ovals, dirt tracks and road course events. In 2008 at the age of 9, he was the recipient of the MotorSports Press Association “Rising Star Award”,  and since then has claimed 32 championships, set numerous track records, and became a Generation Ganassi driver and mentor.

As a child, Tommy won against adults at the early age of 14. In 2013, he was the youngest entrant in events organized by the National Auto Sports Association (NASA) and the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), and still to this day he wins against competitors more than twice his age. Tommy has won over 600 amateur races, including 7 National Championships in QMA, sweeping USAC events, winning the SCCA Spec Miata Championship 4 times, and getting podium finishes in his first two Touring Car America races. Coming up in the Spring of 2023, Tommy will be racing in the inaugural SRO Toyota GR Cup series.

A native of Mountain View, California, Tommy gives back to his local Bay Area community on and off the track by supporting local  non-profits. He created Tommy McCarthy Racing to continue his passion for driver coaching and professional driving. Tommy is currently getting his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
